Abstract
1,152,599. Forming articles by winding. HERCULES Inc. 25 Aug., 1967 [12 Sept., 1966], No. 39316/67. Heading B8G. [Also in Division Dl] Filament wound structures are made by passing a roving R through an inlet seal 34 into a vacuum chamber 28 so as to evacuate the air from the interfilamentary spaces and from the surfaces of the filaments then passing the roving directly through a second seal 43 to be immersed in a resin supply 46 and from the latter into the atmosphere. The roving R is then wound on to a mandrel and the resin is cured to form the structure. As shown the roving R first passes over toroidal guides 38 in an initial resin bath 45, through vacuum seal 34 formed of a rubber tube 35 and then into the vacuum chamber 28. The vacuum in chamber 28 may be 10-20 mm.Hg. The initial resin bath lubricates the roving and assists in maintaining seal 34. Resin bath 45 may be heated. The resin bath 46 may be degassed before use. The two resin baths 45, 46 may be connected to a resin reservoir. Resin bath 46 may be provided with a flap to wipe (47) excess resin from the roving as it leaves the bath, see Fig. 4 (not shown). Resin chamber 46 can be made to deliver the roving downwardly instead of upwardly as shown. The resin may be an epoxy polymer and the roving may be of glass. The resin baths and vacuum chamber 26 are mounted on a traversing carriage (7) together with the-spools of rovings (18), see Figs. 1 and2 (notshown). An arm (21), over which the unwinding roving runs, takes up any slack in the roving by operation of air cylinder (24).
