Abstract
1,152,706. Lasers; discharge lamps. INTERNATIONAL STANDARD ELECTRIC CORP. 29 April, 1966 [30 April, 1965], No. 18859/66. Headings H1C and H1D. A discharge tube in which stimulated emission of radiation may be produced includes a discharge space of annular cross-section containing a gaseous active medium and defined laterally by inner and outer walls of the vessel, and is provided with a coil for producing a discharge in the space when supplied with radio-frequency energy. The spacing between the walls is selected to correspond to the skin-effect depth at the frequency of the r.f. supply. Coolant is passed through the vessel inside the inner wall and also through the hollow r.f. coil. The discharge space contains helium and neon at reduced pressure and mirrors are provided at each end to form a resonant cavity for producing laser action. If the pumping energy is sufficiently high, several oscillatory modes corresponding to a desired energy transition are produced at various positions around the annular active medium, as well as several modes corresponding to other, undesired, transitions. In a first embodiment (Fig. 2, not shown), in which the vessel walls are cylindrical, a carrier is therefore provided between one mirror and the active medium and on this carrier are provided » compensators » and » mode selectors.» The compensators may be transparent plates having a thickness of about one millimeter and arranged obliquely to the radiation path, or metallic needles. The compensators are placed in line with the axes of the desired modes and couple the modes between themselves. The output may be focused by a lens. Undesired modes are suppressed by opaque masks and non-axial modes may be prevented by means of longitudinal opaque partitions in the active medium or outside of it. In another embodiment (Fig. 3, not shown), the vessel walls each form a frustum of a cone and the modes form progressive waves around the active medium. The desired modes are selected by providing small shutters having the desired angular periodicity around the axis of the cones. The output is passed through a prismatic ring and a lens to focus it to a point. The compensators used in the previous embodiment may be used but are not essential. The progressive waves rotating in one direction may be selected at the expense of those rotating in the opposite direction by means of a diaphragm with holes spaced around it. It is stated that the » cones » may have hyperboloidal sections.
