Abstract
1,152,740. Pipe couplings. HEPWORTH IRON CO. Ltd. 21 Dec., 1967 [22 Dec., 1966], No. 57407/66. Headings F2G and F2P. A pipe coupling socket for clayware or slightly resilient synthetic plastics piping comprises a slightly resilient synthetic plastics socket 2, Fig. 2, and an elastomeric cuff 3 having an annular sealing lip (4), Fig. 1 (not shown), extending partly across or into the mouth of the socket from an anchoring skirt 5 round the outside of the socket. The socket, which receives a pipe end 6A, is formed of modified or unmodified ‘rigid’ polyvinyl chloride or polycarbonate or polyacetal or acrylonitrile butadiene styrene or polypropylene, and the cuff may be formed of butyl rubber. In modifications the socket has an internal rib serving as a backing for the lip of the cuff. Alternatively the lip and/or the skirt of the cuff may have an annular bead. The skirt may be secured by its bead or by an adhesive or by a band clamp. The lip of the cuff may have a portion extending inside the socket parallel to the skirt to grip the rim of the socket and the rim of the socket may be castellated. The socket may be one end of a sleeve, the other end of which is a force-fit or secured by adhesive on a synthetic plastics or clayware pipe or is a further socket. The socket sleeve may have internal projections or a flange.
