Abstract

1,155,218. Displacement transducers. GETTYS MFG. CO. Inc. June 10, 1966 [June 11, 1965], No.53265/67. Divided out of 1,155,216. Heading G1N. [Also in Division G3] A tracer head for producing electrical signals representative of the deflection of a stylus with respect to three mutually perpendicular axes, comprises a mounting supported for movement about two axes and having a support for the stylus which is movable along the third axis, a transducer sensing movement about the two areas and a second transducer, within the mounting between the first transducer and the stylus, sensing movement along the third axis. A stylus 62 is retained by a screw in a tapped hole 64 in a member 42 slidably mounted within a pendulum member 36 flexurally mounted on a phosphor bronze diaphragm 30 supported by a casing 1, 2. An upper end 18 of the pendulum member extends to a screw adjusted counterweight 22 and carries a magnetic core 6 co-operating with a linear variable differential transformer assembly 8, 12, responsive to relative angular movement of the pendulum to derive X and Y axis control signals. The linear variable differential transformer assembly comprises quadrature coils such as 4a, 4b on cores, such as 4, which are adjusted to a null control signal output by grub screws 14 concealed by cap screws 16. The slidable member 42 carries a screw adjusted core 50 for a linear variable differential transformer, assembly 40 within the pendulum member 36 which has an output representative of the Z-axis movement of the stylus. The core 50 is biased into the neutral position by a spring 58 and the difference in spring constants between spring 52 and diaphragm 30 is compensated by adjusting the effective length of the spring 52 by a collar 58.
