Abstract
1,155,305. Balancing rotary bodies. W. & T. AVERY Ltd. 8 Sept., 1966 [13 Nov., 1965], No. 40095/66. Heading F2U. An unbalance connecting machine comprises a dynamic balance producing a light spot (23), Fig. 2 (not shown), in known manner, indicating the magnitude and direction of unbalance of a body 6, and a machine tool, e.g. a drill 16, having an indicator device 10 producing an illuminated line (22) which, when coincident with the spot (23), indicates that the body 6 is positioned correctly relative to the drill 16 for drilling to commence, and also indicates the magnitude of the balance correction which subsequently takes place. Two rotary field emitter and receiver systems 1, 2 may be jointly switched in at 3, and electrically separated by switch 4, emitter a rotating in synchronism with the body 6 and receiver b started rotating in synchronism only at low speeds, e.g. by controller 7, the system 2 also rotating in synchronism when switch 4 is closed. Receivers b, c are respectively coupled with a slotted mask 8, and a cam plate 10 having an edge 11. The emitter d is coupled to the drill feed 14 when contact switch 15 is closed, signifying engagement of the drill 16 with the body 6, to engage coupling 12. With switch 3 open the body 6 is rotated to produce spot (23) indicating the unbalance magnitude and direction in the dynamic balance machine. The machine is then stopped but, before body 6 ceases to rotate, switches 3 and 4 are closed so that emitter a and receivers b and c rotate in synchronism therewith. The mask 8, and its slot 9, and the cam plate 10 thus rotate in synchronism, the slot 9 and edge 11, together with a light source (21), forming an illuminated line (22). The body 6 is then brought into its balance correcting position, e.g. by manually rotating the body, indicated by the line (22) passing through the centre of spot (23), and the switch 4 is opened to electrically separate the systems 1 and 2. The drill is then advanced until it touches the body 6, when switches 15 close to engage coupling 12 and to rotate emitter d. Receiver c is then rotated in synchronism causing edge 11 to cut across the illuminated line from slot 9 and hence covering the illuminated line (22) from its radially inner end outwardly. The correct amount of material has been removed when the line (22) is covered to a point coincident with the centre of the spot (23), at which point, such covering may produce a control impulse to terminate drilling. Alternatively, drilling may be terminated manually.
