Abstract

1,155,484. Cyclone separators. NORTH AMERICAN ROOKWELL CORP. 10 Aug., 1967 [19 Sept:, 1966], No. 36769/67. Heading B2P. A cyclone for separating solids from a gas stream comprises an outer tube 20 having at one end an inlet for the gas stream to be cleaned and at the other end a coaxial telcscopic outlet tube 34 through which the gas stream is primarily discharged and ‘between which and the tube 20 the solids are primarily discharged, helical blades 52 being provided between an annular shroud 46 at the inlet end of the tube 20 and a baffle plate 62 spaced from the inlet ends of the tubes 20, 34 so as to impart a swirl to at least a major portion of the entering gas stream. The blades 52 are of generally triangular configuration. Each blade, as shown in Fig. 5, is secured at its apex 54 to theshroud. 46 and comprises a curved upper edge 56 engaging the wall of the tube 20, a straight lower. edge 58 and a downstream edge 60, the apex formed by the edges 58, 60 being secured to the outer edge portion of the baffle plate 62. The blade is formed with a ledge 59 at its lower edge 58 which increases in a downstream direction. The baffle plate 62 is of sufficient size to prevent the gas stream from flowing straight through the tube 34. The blades 52 may, however, be so spaced around the baffle plate 62 that triangular openings 66 are formed between adjacent blades allowing a minor portion of the gas stream to flow straight through the tube 34, the size of the openings depending on the pressure drop required. A number of tubes 20, 34 are mounted in apertures 28, 36 respectively in front and rear walls 14, 16 of a multi-cell gas cleaner assembly.
