Abstract
1,160,717. Gas analysis. O.H. DR€GER [trading as DRAGERWERK, HEINR & BERNH]. Aug.26, 1966 [Aug.26, 1965], No.38505/66. Heading G1B. A testing tube 1 for ascertaining the alcohol content of a sample of exhaled air comprises within the tube a reagent 4 which changes colour in the presence of alcohol and a further reagent 5 which changes colour to indicate the water content of the sample. The reagent 4 preferably comprises silica gel impregnated with potassium bichromate and concentrated sulphuric acid, and the reagent 5 a ceramic carrier impregnated with selenium dioxide and concentrated sulphuric acid. The reagent 4 changes colour from yellow to green in the presence of alcohol and the reagent 5 from green-yellow to red in the presence of water vapour. In using the tube the sample may be blown through the tube to change the colour of the reagent 5 completely, the alcohol content being estimated from the colour change zone of the reagent 4, or the reagent 4 may be completely reacted, the volume of the sample then being estimated from the length of the colour change zone of the reagent 5.
