Abstract
1,176,531. Boring earth &c. A. W. VAN GILS. 3 Jan., 1967, No. 200/67. Heading E1F. [Also in Division F1 A well which undesirably produces during drilling is brought under control by using the energy of the drilling mud discharged from the annulus surrounding the drill string to drive a pump supplying heavier mud to the string. When production starts, drilling is stopped, the blowout preventer is closed, the annulus is connected to the pump which is a reciprocating one, the mud pumps are stopped and the reciprocating pump is connected to the string. When the pressures in the string and annulus at the surface are equal, the production is stopped and a centrifugal pump continues to supply the string until the hole is filled with the heavier mud so that drilling may re-commence.
