Novel 2,3,4,4a,5,6-hexahydro-1H-pyrazino- [1 ,2-a]quinolines which optionally contain on the aromatic ring one or more C 1-7 alkyl, C 1-7 ) alkoxy, C 1-7 alkenyloxy, CF 3 , halo, NO 2 , NH 2 , acylamino, OH or acyloxy substituents; in which the substitutable carbon atoms of the heterocyclic rings are unsubstituted or alkylated and which contain in the 3-position an aliphatic, cycloaliphatic-aliphatic (optionally substituted in the cycloaliphatic portion by 1 or more C 1-7 alkyl and/or C 1-7 alkylated endo- C 1-7 -alkylaene radicals) or araliphatic (optionally substituted in the aromatic ring by one or more of the above listed aromatic ring substituents) hydrocarbon radical R which contains in the α-position only hydrogen and/or carbon atoms; and which is substituted in the aliphatic portion by an oxo group and their salts are prepared by reacting the appropriate 3-unsubstituted pyrazinoquinoline with (a) RX where X is a halogen atom or (b) a corresponding α-#-unsaturated carbonyl compound. Intermediates isolated are 8-methyl-2,3,4,4a,5, 6 – hexahydro – 1H – pyrazino[l,2-a] – quinoline, prepared by debenzylation of the -3 benzylated compound and 8-methozy-2,3,4,4a,5,6-hezahydro-1H-pyrazino[1,2-a]quinoline, prepared similarly. Pharmaceutical compositions comprise one or more of the above novel compounds together with appropriate carrirs and/or diluents and are administered orally, rectally, or parenterally. They are effective as antihypertensives, sedatives and adrenolytics.
