Abstract

1,197,364. Automatic adjusters for disc brakes ; brake cylinders. MESSIER. 29 March, 1968 [30 June, 1967], No. 15264/68. Headings F2E and F2F. A device for compensating for the wear of the friction lining of a brake comprises a cylindrical tube 6, Figs. 1a, 3 (latter not shown), provided with longitudinal slots so that it is radially elastic, attached to one part, e.g. fixed part 1, of the brake. A rod 11 of circular crosssection having an enlarged head 12, e.g. of frusto-conical cross-section, Fig. 4 (not shown), is located within the tube and a ring 15, Fig. 5 (not shown), having a similarly contoured inner surface to that of the end of the rod 11 is arranged round the tube 6. The relative dimensions of the tube 6, ring 15 and head 12 are such that the smallest diameter of the ring is less than the largest diameter of the head plus twice the wall thickness of the tube so that the movement of the ring to the LHS under the action of compression spring 18 causes the tube 6 to be clamped between the ring and rod. The ring is located between two collars 8, 9 on a member 2 attached to a second pair, e.g. the movable part carrying the friction lining 3, of the brake, spaced apart by a distance equal to the working clearance of the brake. In operation, for an unworn friction lining, the member 2 moves such that the opposed surfaces of the collars 8, 9 just contact the ring 15. If wear occurs resulting in an increased clearance of u, at the end of the movement of member 2 to the RHS the ring 15 is engaged and moved forward by the distance u, resulting in the releasing of the tube 6. Under the force of spring 18 the rod 11 is moved to the LHS until the tube is again clamped between it and the ring thus taking up the extra distance u. On release of the brake, the member 2 will then move back to its initial position. As applied to a disc brake, Figs. 2, 6 (latter not shown), in which one or a plurality of discs 4 are gripped between friction linings 3 subjected to a force from an hydraulically operated piston 2 in cylinder block 1, the ring 15 moves between an abutment nut 8 and ring 9 mounted on the piston and the tube 6 is bolted to the cylinder block. The rod 11 is at its RH end screwed into a socket 13 between which and the ring 9 the restoring spring 29 of the piston is mounted. When the friction lining is replaced the clamping action of the rod 11 and ring 15 is released by pushing the rod 11 to the LHS by a screw (43) provided on a flange (41) which when screwed in pushes on the release plug 31 which in turn pushes on the socket 13. The cylinder block is provided with additional cylinder 22.
