Abstract

1,199,341. Velocity-modulated tubes. TRW Inc. 1 May, 1968 [11 July, 1967], No. 20728/68. Heading HID. The interaction between an electron stream and resonant cavity through which it passes is increased by operating a rectangular cavity in the TE 11 mode or a cylindrical cavity in the TM 01 mode, whereby for a suitable stream velocity, velocity-modulated electrons entering the cavity at the commencement of a cycle are accelerated or decelerated throughout a complete cycle. For the rectangular cavity of Fig. 2, the stream velocity is arranged such that electrons entering through grid 25 at the commencement of a cycle just reach the midpoint of the cavity as the electric field pattern passes through zero and the field lines reverse in sense. In the klystron of Fig. 1, cavity 15 is operated in normal klystron buncher fashion, with an interaction time of a half cycle or less, while the cavity 16 is excited by the bunched beam in the mode described above.
