Abstract

1,199,416. Marine fenders. ANDRE RUBBER CO. Ltd. 26 Oct., 1967 [18 Oct., 1966], No. 46552/66. Heading B7S. [Also in Division F2] A buffer, in particular a marine fender, consists of one or more elastomeric bodies each having a generally elliptical through hole so mounted that a compressive load deforms the or each body by outward bending of the two arms of elastomeric material bounding the hole. The hole’s cross-section is an ellipse tapering to points at each end of its major axis, the major axis being at an acute (Fig. 2) or a right (Fig. 10) angle to the surfaces by which the load or impact is applied to the body; in the Figures shown these are horizontal surfaces. Lateral spreading of the ends of the elastomeric bodies is resisted, e.g. by abutting surfaces such as the vertical surfaces of the load-applying members 22 and 23 of Fig. 2, or by rigid rods 44 embedded in the elastomer as shown in the upper part of Fig. 10 with rigid means such as a fishplate (not shown) linking the rods. The outer surface of the or each body may be curvilinear as in Fig. 2 or rectilinear as in Fig. 10, the body may be made in one piece (Fig. 2) or two (Fig. 10) and where a plurality of bodies are provided they may be separate unitary bodies (Fig. 2), separate twopiece bodies (Figs. 7 to 9, not shown) or an integral moulding having a plurality of elliptically-apertured portions (Figs. 4 to 6, not shown).
