Abstract
1,205,271. Transparent laminate. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. 24 Aug., 1967 [27 April, 1967], No. 38975/67. Heading B5N. [Also in Divisions B2 and H5] A transparent laminate having an internal metallic coating to provide infra-red radiation reflecting properties, has the coating formed on at least part of a roughened surface of a substrate and a plastics layer, of similar refractive index to the substrate, in intimate contact with the surface defined by the coating or the coating and the substrate. This construction prevents the laminate from acting as a mirror whilst leaving the transparency of the laminate substantially undiminished. The plastics layer may be applied in layer form or in liquid form. In a first embodiment, the substrate, coating and plastics layer are respectively of transparent glass or plastics material, gold or aluminium or a metal oxide (e.g. stannous oxide), and polyvinyl butyrate. The two surfaces of the coating may have similar or different roughness patterns which may be regular or otherwise. The roughened surface of the substrate may be produced by grinding, chemical etching or sand blasting. The coating may be formed by vacuum deposition. It may provide for electrical resistance heating of the laminate, in which case two narrow strips of silver paste may be deposited along opposite edges of the coating for connection to an electric power source. The coating may not extend up to the edges of the laminate, and may not he continuous, in which case some of the peaks of the roughness pattern of the substrate will extend through the coating to contact the plastics layer, Fig. 3 (not shown). The outer surfaces of the laminate are smooth and may be plane and parallel or follow the same curve or follow different curves to obtain a lens. The substrate and the plastics layers may be of polyethylene terephthalate and polyvinyl butyrate respectively to produce a flexible laminate. The outer surface of the plastics layer may be covered with a further layer of glass or plastics material, either permanently or only during the lamination process.
