In a silencer having a shell 10 and end members 11 and 13, an inlet pipe 12 communicates with an expansion chamber 14 through perforations 29 formed on a portion of the inlet pipe and a tube assembly 15 disposed in the shell has at least one perforated tube 16…. 22 with one end communicating with the expansion chamber and the other end opening out at the end member 13 defining a concave sound reflecting surface having a diameter substantially greater than the inside diameter of the perforated tube and of a value greater than the wavelength of the dominant noise frequency. The tube assembly 15 has six inclined tubes surrounding a central axial tube and includes a plurality of intermediate partitions 24, 25, spaced from the inner surface of the shell 10. Sound absorbent material 26 is provided between the tube assembly 15 and the shell 10. The perforations 29 may be formed in a tube 28 mounted on the inlet pipe 12, Fig.2 (not shown). Discs 30 are secured to the wall of the chamber 14. In a further embodiment, Fig.4 (not shown), the inlet pipe (36) extends through the side wall of the shell (31) to the opposite side of the expansion chamber (35) and the perforations (38) are provided in a plate (37) extending 180 degrees around the inlet pipe. A drain pipe (40) for liquids extends from the end member (32) defining the expansion chamber (35).
