An asbestos board or paper which is used for electrical or thermal insulation is formed by binding asbestos fibres with a binder which is formed by the chemical combination of an alkali metal silicate, e.g. sodium silicate and an alkali metal aluminate, e.g. sodium aluminate. The silicate and aluminate may be associated with an agent which modifies the physical and/ or chemical structure of the precipitate, e.g. a salt or an acid. The molecular proportions of aluminate to silicate are preferably 2:1-6. Fillers or inorganic fibres, e.g. glass fibres, rock wool or metal wool may be added to the asbestos. The board or paper may be prepared by agitating asbestos fibres in water, adding sodium aluminate, then sodium silicate, then ammonium chloride and drying, the product may be cured at 200‹C.
