Abstract
1,205,602. Halogenated polyhydroxyl compounds. UGINE KUHLMANN. 4 Sept., 1967 [2 March, 1967], No. 40251/67. Addition to 1,012,328. Heading C2C. [Also in Division C3] The invention comprises halogenated polyhydroxyl compounds having the formula Ar[-O-R(OH) n-1 ] m in which Ar is a polyvalent radical of valency m derived from a polyhalogenated polyphenyl and/or polyphenyl benzene and contains at least 3 halogen atoms per aromatic ring, R is a polyhydrocarbon radical of valency n having 2-40 carbon atoms and one or more ether or thioether links and with or without one or more double bonds, and n and m are whole numbers such that when n = 2, m>1 (with the exception of compounds in which n and m both equal 2 and Ar is a perchloro-diphenylene radical) and when n>2, m is #1 and esters thereof. The polyhydroxyl compounds may be prepared by reacting a polyhalogenated polyphenyl and/or a polyhalogenated polyphenyl benzene with excess of a polyol of formula R(OH) n in the presence of a hydrogen halide acceptor in a solvent for the product. The preferred polyhalogenated-polyphenyl is decachlorodiphenyl but other polyphenyls referred to include perchloroterphenyl and octochlorodiphenyl. Suitable polyols are diethylene, triethylene and tetraethylene glycols; dipropylene and tripropylene glycols; 1,6-hexanediol; 1,5-pentane-diol; butenediol; propoxy butenediol; the monoallyl ether of trimethylolpropane and hydrogenated bisphenol A. The product of the reaction between decachlorodiphenyl and triethylene glycol is esterified by treating with a mixture of maleic anhydride and propyleneglycol.
