Abstract

1,213,386. Testing batteries. WARWICK ELECTRONICS Inc. Aug. 8, 1968 [Aug. 8, 1967 (2)], No. 37960/68. Heading G1U. A battery condition indicator comprises a lightemitting device, e.g. neon 20, which, provided the battery voltage is above a certain minimum, flickers at a rate dependant on the battery voltage. In Fig. 1 an oscillator 12 is energized by the battery 10 and thus supplies oscillations whose magnitude is proportional to the battery voltage. These oscillations are stepped-up by transformer 23, rectified by diode 13 and used to charge a capacitor 17 through resistors 15, 16. When the capacitor voltage reaches the ignition voltage of neon lamp 20 the latter momentarily lights and discharges the capacitor, which starts to charge again, repeating the cycle. The lamp thus flickers at a rate dependant on the time taken to charge the capacitor, which in turn is dependant on the battery voltage. By adjusting resistor 15 the lamp is made to appear, to the human eye, continuously energized when the battery is fresh. As the voltage drops the flicker becomes more noticeable, the rate of the flicker decreasing until the voltage is so low that the lamp cannot light at all.
