1,213,486. Ammoniation of acids. OCCIDENTAL RESEARCH & ENG. L t d. 11 Dec., 1967 [20 Nov., 1967], No. 56297/67. Heading ClA. [Also in Division B ‘ – In the ammoniation of acids, particularly phosphoric acid, by a fast chemical reaction, a mixture of the reactants, e.g. H 3 PO 4 , NH 3 and H 2 0, is formed and at least a portion of one of the reactants is allowed to react completely within a reaction period to form steam and a reaction product e.g. ammonium phosphate and ammonium polyphosphate. The steam is used to propel the product through and expel it it from the reaction zone. The product is then cooled e.g. by counter-current heat exchange with air. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 1 phosphoric acid, anhydrous NH 3 and water are admitted into reaction vessel 1 through conduits 2, 3, 4 respectively. The product is discharged into cooling tower 6 where it is cooled by a counter-current of air supplied by blower 7, and is then discharged into receiving vessel 9 and transferred to storage through conduits 10, 11. Ammonia is fed in through inlet 14, heat exchanger 13, valve 16, meter 17 to the inlet of reaction vessel 1. Water is fed to the inlet of conduit 30 through valve 32, meter 33 to reaction vessel 1. The NH 3 and acid can be admitted in the correct proportions to obtain a product having the desired pH, or a portion of the product may be routed through conduit 19, pH meter-controller 20 and conduit 21 back to receiving vessel 9. Valve 99 in conduit 15 is actuated by means 22 in response to an output signal from pH meter controller 20 and thus the flow of NH 3 is controlled. The specific gravity of the product can be controlled by regulating the flow of water through valve 34, which is controlled by actuator 35, which is responsive to the output signal from specific gravity indicator controller 28. In another embodiment the reaction vessel comprises a fluid receiving means for the reactants the lower portion of which is provided with apertures and extends into a reaction column. The column is composed of cylindrical sections and plates each having apertures obturate the column in spaced-apart relationship, and packing is disposed between the plates. An alternative reaction chamber comprises a reaction vessel with a centrally disposed perforated tube, and plates obturate the passage in the tube at intervals. Baffles close the passage between the tube and the inner wall of the reaction vessel, and one of each of the baffles is located intermediate the locations of two successive plates in the tube.
