Abstract
1,213,789. Coating apparatus. O. A. BECKER. 31 Oct., 1967 [2 Sept., 1967; 6 Sept., 1967], No. 3012/70. Divided out of 1,211,555. Heading B2L. In a method of protecting from corrosion blank areas of sheet metal otherwise coated with protective layers, pasty rust-protective agents are applied to the blank areas by the aid of rotatable rollers or circulating belts by moving the sheet metal and rollers or belts in contact with and relative to one another. In Fig. 1 a roller 201 is rigid with a shaft 203 driven by a motor 202 mounted on a carriage 211 suported by rollers 214 on rails 215. Roller 201 dips into a trough 204 containing coating medium, the thickness of which on roller 201 is governed by a doctor blade 205. The edge 208c of a panel 208 to be coated is so positioned that roller 201, on being advanced towards edge 208c, tangentially engages the lower edge of the latter. Alternatively, roller 201 engages the underside of a pane 210 resting on a support 209. In Fig. 3 an applicator roller 221 is rigid with a spindle 203 driven by a motor 202 mounted on a carriage 225 supported ‘by rollers 214 on rails 215. A distributor roller 222 is rigid with a spindle 203a driven from spindles 203 via a belt 227. The lower ends of rollers 221, 222 dip into a trough 223 containing coating medium which is raised by a helix 222d provided on roller 222, and is transferred thereby to the upper part of roller 221, the thickness thereon being governed by a doctor blade 224. The edge 208c of a panel 208, resting on a support 207, is coated by co-operation with the upper part of roller 221. In Fig. 4 a lower roller 231 is rigid with a spindle 251 journalled in vertical slots 211c formed in a structure 211. Roller 231 is biased by springs against an upper roller 232 rigid with a spindle 252 driven by a motor 202 mounted on structure 211. Spindle 251 is driven from spindle 252 via a crossed belt 234. Roller 231 dips into trough 235 containing coating medium. A trough 236, located above roller 232, contains coating medium which flows on to roller 232 via a slot in trough 236 controlled by an adjustable member 237. A panel 208, fixed to a carriage 239 supported by rollers 240 on rails 241, is advanced towards rollers 231, 232, whereby the edge 208c and adjacent based surfaces 208d, 208e pass into the nip of the rollers and are coated thereat. Panel 208 is retracted by the reversal of the movement of carriage 239 when the latter engages a limit switch 242. In a modification, upper and lower spindles, similar to spindles 251, 252, carry narrow co-operating roller members equal in width to a based strip of panel passing therebetween. In Fig. 6 a carriage 280, suspended by rollers 285, 286 from a rail 287, has pivoted thereto at 281 a two-armed lever 270. One arm of the latter journals a roller 271 and the other arm journals rollers 277, 278, 279, said rollers supporting an endless belt 272 which is pressed by a plate 275 against an applicator roller 274 journalled in a reservoir 273 of coating medium. The coated surface of belt 272 is pressed against a panel 208 by the rollers 278, 279 when said other arm is biased towards panel 208 by the piston rod 284 of an energised air cylinder against the bias of a spring 282.
