Abstract
1,213,790. Coating apparatus. O. A. BECKER. 31 Oct., 1967 [11 Nov., 1966; 6 Feb., 1967; 11 Feb., 1967], No. 3013/70. Divided out of 1,211,555. Heading B2L. In a method of protecting from corrosion blank areas of sheet metal otherwise coated with protective layers, absorbent material, e.g. a sponge, soaked with a rust-rotective agent is guided along the blanck areas by moving the sheet metal and the absorbent material relative to each other in contact with each other. In Fig. 1 a container 307 has a horizontal opening 306 bounded by inturned lips 307a. Rollers 304, 305, mounted on container 307, run on respective rails 302, 303. A plate 311, slidable in container 307, is biased towards opening 306 by a spring 312, and provides a chamber 307e for coating medium which passes through perforations in plate 311 to impregnate a sponge 310 fixed to plate 311. In use, a panel 301 is advanced through opening 306 until its edge 301a engages sponge 310. For coating the opposed edges of panels moving along a production line, a fixed container 307 is provided for each edge. In (Fig. 4) the edges (21d, 21e) of a V-shaped notch formed in a panel (21) are coated by contact with a V-shaped sponge housed in a V-shaped extension of a container (41). In Fig. 5 a hollow cone 71, formed with perforations 76, is covered with sponge material 77 and is journalled on a stationary reservoir 72 via a sealing ring 78. A shaft 73, rigid with cone 71, is jourralled at 80 on reservoir 72 and is driven via a pulley 74 and belt 75. Cone 71 is lowered into a hole 21g formed in a panel 21. In (Fig. 6) a reservoir (161a) discharges via a drip orifice (165) on to a vertical transfer roller (163) in frictional contact with an applicator roller (164) with which an edge of a panel makes contact through an opening (166) bounded by lips (167). In Fig. 7 a hollow body 626, slidably mounted within a housing 629 and biased to the retracted position by springs 630, carries a reservoir 625 discharging via a drip nozzle on to a sponge applicator 6234 provided on a bar 624 rigid with slidable partition defining a chamber 626c of body 626. Bar 624 is rigid with the piston rod 627b of an air cylinder 627a rigid with housing 629, whereby body 626 is advanced, on energisation of cylinder 627a, and an edge 609a of a panel 609 passes through lips 626b opening from chamber 626c, to engage applicator 623a. The apparatus may be combined with means for blowing heated air on the coated edge through lips (636d, Fig. 8) similar to lips 626b. In Fig. 9 the body 626 is provided with an endless applicator belt 650 carried on rollers 652, one of which is driven by a motor 651, and belt 650 is backed at the applicating point by a spring-biased plate 653. The armature 654a of a solenoid 654 is connected by links 655a, 655b to rods 656 rigid with body 626, for advancing the latter when solenoid 654 is energised. In (Fig. 10) the upturned edge (117c) of a car door (117) is coated by contact with a sponge applicator (116) contained in an extension (114b) of a reservoir 114a.
