Abstract

1,220,378. Resin-coated packaging foils. DR. KURT HERBERTS & CO. 20 May, 1968 [29 Feb., 1968], No. 23803/68. Heading B2E. A packaging foil comprises one or more flexible support foils coated with vinyl or vinylidene polymer, the support having been primed with an adhesion promoter comprising a mixture of (i) a polymer of H 2 C=C(X)(A) where X=Cl or F and A=H or X, and (ii) an organic compound of at least 2 isocyanate groups, the N=C=O content of the mixture, related to solids, being at least 0.1, preferably 2-7, wt%. The support is primed with a solution of the promoter and the solvent is evaporated, subsequently the vinyl or vinylidene polymer is applied, e.g. as a solution or dispersion whose solvent or dispersion medium is then removed by evaporation. Suitable polymers for the top layer and the primer are polyvinylidene chloride and polyvinyl chloride; the polymers may be homopolymers or copolymers containing one or more co-monomers in amounts of up to 50 wt% of total polymer, e.g. acrylates, acrylonitrile, methacrylates, methacrylonitrile, vinyl chloride, styrene, maleates, vinyl esters, allyl crotonates, butadiene, epoxy compounds. The isocyanate may be a diisocyanate, e.g. toluylene diisocyanate, a triisocyanate or a polyisocyanate, e.g. the reaction product of a polyester of adipic acid and ethylene glycol with diphenylmethane-4, 4′-diisocyanate. The support foil may be polypropylene, cellulose hydrate, polyester, e.g. polyethylene, terephthalate, paper, metal, polyamide, polyethylene or polyvinyl chloride. Solvents or dispersion media include ethyl acetate, methyl ethyl ketone, acetone and mixtures thereof. The primer and top layer may be applied in quantities of 0.1-1 and 1-6g dry weight per sq. metre.
