Abstract
1,220,461. Paper. ALKALINE BATTERIES Ltd. 12 Feb., 1968 [15 Feb., 1967], No. 7359/ 67. Headings D2A and D2B. A porous sheet material, suitable for use as a separator in electric storage batteries using an alkaline electrolyte is made by forming a sheet of (a) fibres of thermoplastic polymer plastics material, at least part of which is nylon staple fibre, (b) fibres of regenerated cellulose, (c) a thermoplastic polymeric plastics powder which includes nylon powder, and (d) cellulosic powder, the fibres being randomly arranged in a compact non-woven mat and the powders distributed therethrough, and heating the sheet to sinter the thermo-plastic constituents. The proportions by weight are:-fibres 80 to 95% of which 50 to 80% are thermoplastic, powder 20 to 5%. An inert powder such as barium sulphate or titanium dioxide may also be present. In the Example, 45% of nylon staple fibre, 45% of regenerated cellulose staple fibre, 2¢% nylon powder, 2¢% regenerated cellulose powder and 5% titanium dioxide powder are formed into a sheet by papermaking techniques, and then passed through heated rolls to sinter the nylon and reduce the thickness to 0.21 mm.
