Abstract

1,220,645. Polyamide carboxylic acids; polybenzoxazinones. FARBENFABRIKEN BAYER A.G. 20 May, 1969 [10 June, 1968], No. 25583/69. Heading C3R. [Also in Division C2] An aromatic polyamidocarboxylic acid (A) has recurring units (III) where Ar, Ar1 and Ar11 represent mono- or poly-nuclear, condensed or attached aromatic radicals, unsubstituted or substituted by halogen, C 1 -C 4 alkyl, cycloalkyl, or C 1 -C 4 alkoxy groups, and X represents a single covalent bond, -CH 2 -, -CO-, -O-, -S-, N-SO 2 – (A) has rel. soln. viscosity # rel >1À2 (for 0À5 g. (A) in 100 ml. N – methyl – pyrrolidone at 20 C.). (A) is made by polycondensing (V) with Hal-OC-Art11-CO-Hal at 0-60 C. in polar organic solvents e.g. N,N-dimethylacetamide or N-methylpyrrolidone. The reaction mixture may also contain up to 95 mol. per cent, based on total diamino compounds, of aromatic diamines, e.g. m- or p-phenylenediamine, or 4,41– diamino – diphenyl- -methane, -ether, -sulphide, or -sulphone. To remove HCl formed during the reaction epoxides may be added to form the chlorohydrins or the polymer may be pptd. by pouring into water, washed, dried, and redissolved, e.g. in N,N-dimethylformamide, N,N – dimethyl acetamide, N – methyl pyrrolidone, or N – methyl caprolactam. The solutions may be used to form fibres, foils, coatings, or linings. When heated to 150 C., these will be converted to polybenzoxazinones (B) as described below. Examples describe preparations of (A) having recurring units Aromatic polybenzoxazinones (B) with recurring units (I) having softening pt. > 280 C. are made by heating (A) to > 150 C. after removal of solvent. Examples describe preparations from the above respective (A) compounds of (B) having recurring units
