Abstract

1,220,868. Selective printing. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP. 7 May, 1968 [26 May, 1967], No. 21554/68. Heading B6F. [Also in Divisions F1 and F2] Pneumatic hammer impression action.-A print hammer 1 is actuated by pneumatic pressure by a pneumatic circuit including a valve 4 having a normally open channel, fluid being supplied to the valve 4 to effect an impression and the channel being closed after a predetermined interval by fluid pressure. In a first embodiment, Fig. 2, a valve 5 having a rest condition on which a port 11 is connected to atmosphere at 10 and a port 9, connected to compressed air supply means 8, is closed, is switched by an electromagnet 6 to interconnect the ports 9, 11 and permit air to pass to a cylinder 2 connected to the hammer 1. Air is also permitted thereby to flow through a constriction 14 to close the valve 4 after a predetermined time interval, connecting the port 15 supplying the cylinder 2 to atmosphere at 16. After the valve 4 has closed off communication between the supply means 8 and the cylinder, the electromagnet 6 is de-energized to close the valve 5 through a spring 7 permitting the air holding the valve 4 closed to flow to atmosphere at 10, and the valve 4 to open under the influence of a spring 17. In a modification, Fig. 4, a foil valve 20 is employed in place of the valve 5. A valve 24 is normally closed, under which condition a thin foil 27 is urged by air pressure to close a port communicating via a line 22 with the valve 4. The valve 24 may be opened electromagnetically through a lever 26 to connect a line 23 to atmosphere at 25, the foil then closing the port leading to line 23 and permitting flow of air along line 22 through the valve 4 to operate the hammer 1. Some air also passes through the constriction 14 to close the valve 4 and connect the cylinder 2 to atmosphere at 16. While the valve 4 is open, air pressure in a line 23 acts to urge a second foil 35 in a foil valve 30 to close a line 32 to atmosphere. When the valve 4 is closed the pressure in line 33 drops and the foil 35 opens the line 32 to reduce the pressure upstream of the foil valve 20. A further modification (Fig. 3, not shown) includes the foil valve 20 of Fig. 4 but replaces the foil valve 30 and line 33 by a variable throttle (28). The fluid pressure circuit can be assembled in a monolithic block by punched, die cast or injection moulded plastics plates (39a … 39j), Figs. 5, 6, not shown, compressed between metal plates (37, 38), the plastics plates being formed with apertures accommodating piston slide valves equivalent to the valves 4, 5 and slots defining the air lines. A line of hammers 1 may co-operate with type elements (82), Fig. 1, not shown, mounted on flexible fingers (81) assembled on a reciprocating bar (80).
