Abstract

1,222,265. Cathode-ray tube displays. INTERNATIONAL STANDARD ELECTRIC CORP. 27 Nov., 1968 [6 Dec., 1967], No. 56286/68. Heading H4T. In an arrangement for displaying data received from a computer on one or more display devices (e.g. cathode-ray display tubes) the data is first stored in a buffer memory from which it is transferred to a further memory device(s) each associated with a respective display device, each of the further memory device(s) storing a complete row of data which may be recirculated therein via the buffer memory a plurality of times to enable a single row of data (e.g. symbols, characters &c.) to be reproduced on the display device(s) during a like plurality of line scans. Fig. 1 shows the general scheme in which the computer 1 is connected over a link 2 to an adapter 3 and thence to driving means 4 comprising a computer communication device 6 (enabling data produced by a keyboard 11 to be fed to the computer), an image memory 7, a symbol generator 8 and via a control unit 9 to one or more display cathode-ray tubes 5. Referring to Fig. 2, the image memory 7, comprising a magnetic-strictive delay line, is connected with a shift register 14 to form a recirculating delay line memory from which, under the control of clock pulses the data appertaining to a complete row of symbols, characters &c. is transferred to a row memory 15 in which it is recirculated the plurality of times which the line scanning of the display tube(s) requires for reproduction (in the form of bright-up points on a line raster). At each recirculation the data is transferred to a decoder 17 and thence to a diode matrix 18 which provides signals controlling the production of the actual signals required to produce the symbols &c. by brightness control of the beam of the display tube(s) in the form of a 5 x 7 dot matrix. Such signals may be utilized directly if a monitor type display tube unit is employed but if a conventional television receiver is employed the signals are first modulated at 20 on to a suitable carrier wave frequency. It is assumed that eight interlaced lines are necessary to reproduce one row of symbols &c. and the plurality of times that the data is recirculated in memory 15 is therefore eight. A further arrangement is described (Fig. 3, not shown) in which memory 15 comprises seven shift registers fed in parallel from shift register 14 and connected in sequence to the decoder each register being up-dated when its contents have been transferred so that data appertaining to eight rows is always in transit.
