Abstract

1,223,931. Explosive shells. BREVETS AERO-MECANIQUES S.A. 4 June, 1968 [9 June, 1967], No. 26432/68. Heading F3A. A spin-stabilized explosive shell comprises a base detonating fuze to ensure the firing of the charge 5 and 7 of the shell in the event of impact, the fuze comprising a spiral strip 14 which expands under the action of centrifugal force to arm the fuze, the constituent elements of the fuze, instead of being housed in a separate casing which is then inserted in a housing formed in the base 1 of the shell, are mounted directly in the housing, previously arranged to be able to receive said constituent elements, the housing being of sufficient internal diameter to allow the strip to unwind. The fuze is also arranged to provide muzzle safety and a self-destruction means. The spiral strip 14 is surrounded by an expansible split ring 16, and, is connected at one end to an inertia sleeve 17 which, on firing the shell, retards the unlocking of a striker 9 by the spiral strip. The unlocked striker is, however, still retained against the action of a spring 10 by locking balls 12 which are released in the event of impact or during the trajectory of the shell if the force of the spring 10 exceeds the centrifugal force acting on the balls 12. The explosive charge 7 contains hard fragments such as darts and is contained within a steel or plastics cap 6 including a plastics insert 8. A tracer 3 is screwed or crimped into the base of the shell. A sintered iron driving band 4 spins the shell.
