Abstract

1,229,376. Frequency generators. R.C.A. CORPORATION. 22 Sept., 1969 [23 Sept., 1968], No. 46467/69. Heading H3A. The invention relates to a digital frequency synthesizer, in which the output of a voltagecontrolled oscillator 12 is applied to a variablefrequency dividing network 20, the output of which is applied to one input of a phase comparator circuit 42. A reference frequency source 28 applies a reference frequency to a second input of the phase comparator 42 and produces a correction signal which is applied over line 48 to correct the frequency of the oscillator 12. In such an arrangement, if the frequency Fn applied to the phase comparator circuit 42 is low, the frequency of the oscillator 12 can drift seriously between successive checks in the phase comparator. To provide a more frequent control of the oscillator frequency its output is applied over line 58 to a sample gate 56 in which it is gated at the frequency delivered by divider 32 from the pulse reference oscillator 28. The output from sample gate 56 is applied over buffer 62 and low-pass filter 68 to a combiner 50 in which it is added in to control the frequency of oscillator 12. Ganged switches 74, 76 may be provided whereby the primary control loop via phase comparator 42 is only completed when setting up the frequency of the oscillator; alternatively the primary control loop may be closed at intervals to check the frequency.
