Abstract
1,231,662. Wind tunnels. UNITED AIRCRAFT CORP. 31 May, 1968 [5 June, 1967], No. 26075/68. Heading B7G. [Also in Division F2] A wind tunnel model is supported from a foundation by means which transmit certain modes of vibration but not others: in particular, vertical vibrations of the model may be transmitted to the support and horizontal ones isolated therefrom. In Figs. 1 and 2, a model 10 is supported by three rods 12, 14, 16 each of which is connected to the model in the manner shown in Fig. 4, viz. by way of a universal joint 50 and a damper 38. The latter is a hydropneumatic piston-cylinder device the construction of which is shown in Fig. 7. The disposition of the dampers is such that, in Fig. 1, vertical vibrations of the model are transmitted to the foundation but horizontal ones are not. The dampers’ frequency response may however be such that steady horizontal loads are transmitted. Fig. 8 (not shown) depicts a fluidpressure circuit in which all the dampers are interconnected for conjoint operation.
