Abstract

1,232,751. Sample loading device for liquid chromatography columns. TECHNICON INSTRUMENTS CORP. 15 Jan., 1969 [19 Jan., 1968], No. 2359/69. Heading B1X. Samples loaded in containers 10 located in concentric rows of apertures in rotatable table 12 are eluted successively therefrom on to chromatography columns (300, 302) (see Figs. 5 and 6, not shown) by causing the table 12 to rotate intermittently so as to bring two containers at a time between eluent inlet fittings 36, 38 and column inlet fittings 32, 34. When in place, the table 12 is lowered and push rods 94 bear down on blind bores 108, pressing the spring-biassed eluent inlets 36, 38 down on containers 10, and containers 10 in turn down on column inlets 32, 34. Eluent then passes through inlet 128, along bore 126, and into and through container 10, thereby eluting the sample which passes to columns (300, 302) along bores 134, 144. When elution is complete, push rods 94 are retracted, allowing inlets 36, 38 to rise, table 12 is raised and rotated until the next pair of containers 10 is located in place, whereupon the cycle is repeated. Sample containers 10 (see Fig. 7, (not shown) comprise ion-exchange resin (22) or other flow retarding material laden with sample located between porous discs (20, 24) surmounted, if desired or necessary, by insert rod (26) which allows a narrow annular space (27) for the passage of eluent. Details are also provided of the mechanical means whereby the indexing and rotation of the table 12, and the location in place of the containers 10 for elution of their, contents are achieved (see Figs. 1 and 3, not shown).
