Abstract
1,243,791. Dewaxing oils. BRITISH PETROLEUM CO. Ltd. 17 July, 1969 [29 Aug., 1968], No. 25762/68. Heading C5E. Distillate petroleum oils boiling in the range 350-600‹ C. are dewaxed in a two-stage process comprising (i) catalytically hydrogenating the oil at elevated temperature and pressure in the presence of a Group VI A or VIII (Mendeleef Periodic Table) hydrogenating component and a crystalline alkali metaldeficient mordenite, and (ii) cooling the partially dewaxed product in the presence of a selective solvent for the oil. Stage (i) can be effected at 450-950‹ F., 100-3000 p.s.i.g., a space velocity of 0À1-20 v/v/hr., and a gas rate of 500-30,000 SCF of hydrogen/B. The mordenite contains less than 3% by wt. alkali metal ions, and is preferably in the hydrogen form, i.e. decationized; alternatively Ca, Mg or rare earth metal ions may be substituted. The catalyst preferably contains 0À01-10% by wt. Pt or Pd introduced by ion exchange. In stage (ii) the solvent may be methyl ethyl ketone, methyl i-butyl ketone, a mixture thereof, methylene chloride, ethylene dichloride or propane, and may also contain benzene or toluene. The mixture may be chilled to – 30‹ to +40‹ F., at a solvent : oil ratio of 1-5 : 1.
