Abstract

1,244,035. Electric railway systems and vehicles; vehicle wheels. G. CROMPTON. 14 Aug., 1968 [17 Jan., 1968], No. 38951/68. Headings B7C and B7L. [Also in Division H2] A railway vehicle comprises an aluminium body having vertical side walls 95, 101 and 96, 102 mounted on two pairs of wheels, each wheel being independently journalled in, and of a height greater than one-half the height of, the side walls, wherein the centre section of the body is of a greater width than the ends and bumpers 161, 162 are contacted by the wheel rims due to centrifugal force on sharp corners. A prime mover P.M., either an electric motor or diesel engine drives a generator GEN to produce 3-phase current supplied to induction motors via rheostat, circuit breakers RH, CB and a forward and reverse switch 21. Each induction motor comprises a stator IL or IR fixedly attached to the vehicle body and adjacent a respective wheel 51 or 52 which forms the rotor. Each wheel, for example 15, comprises a tread 53, flange 55 and hub 75 made of steel and connected by steel spokes 71 covered with copper or beryllium bronze plates 73. Hub 75 is mounted on an axle 77 rotatable in a bronze bearing 83. The stators are supported from the vehicle body by brackets 113 and comprise steel cylinders 115, 117 forming a casing for a yoke 121 and windings 119. The yoke consists of soft iron ribbon wound around a mandrel to form a rigid annular disc whereas the windings 119, formed of iron or copper ribbon is wound as in Fig. 7 to form nine pole pieces A-J connected as shown. The windings 119 are insulated from all surrounding components with poles C and H connected to terminals 32, 31 or 171, 172 of switch 21, and pole G connected to earth. The stators are connected to the terminals via bus-bars 131-134 of beryllium bronze and cables 45, 46 suspended from the fibreglass roof of the vehicle.
