Abstract

1,246,465. Fuel injection pumps. CATERPILLAR TRACTOR CO. Dec. 2, 1968 [Dec.13, 1967], No. 57051/68. Heading F1A. [Also in Division G3] A combined fuel pump and governor for an I. C. engine, comprises a housing 11 having a fuel inlet 13 and a relief outlet 23 controlled by spring- loaded valve 15 whose setting can be varied by a manually operated lever 37 and axially moveable spool 27, a piston 71 acted upon on its upper surface 129 by fuel pressure, and on its lower surface 79 by fluid-pressure, controlled by a valve 105 disposed in a cam-shaft 101 and responsive to centrifugal force, and a spring 77, the piston having a groove 83 locating a pin 85 on a lever 87 which, via a shaft 89, controls the position of a spill port collar 93 on the plungers 95 of a fuel pump bonnet 97. Valve 105 has an annular recess 119, and as it moves outwards relative to the axis of the cam shaft 101, connects a port 117 with the underside of the piston 71 via passageways 121, 120 to balance the fuel-pressure acting on surface 129. When the speed decreases due to increased load, fluid-pressure in a bore 111 acts between the valve and a slug 113 to cause the valve to move inwardly to connect the underside of the piston with a relief outlet 137 via passageway 121, 134, and 135. Piston 71 is then moved downwards to rotate lever 87 and move collars 93 to increase the volume of fuel delivered, and the speed of the engine, until the fluid-pressure metered by valve 105 balances the fuel pressure acting on the top of piston 71. The downward movement of the piston 71 is limited by a resilient stop 141. Lever 39 is moved by a linkage (41), Fig. 2 (not shown), attached, e.g. to an accelerator, to adjust the setting of spring 25 between high and low speed positions (A) and (B) respectively. To stop the engine, the lever 39 is moved beyond position (B) whereupon it engages a notch (63) in a spring-loaded lever (47).
