Spruce wood is provided with a hard skin by delignifying to a depth of at least 0.01 mm using acidified sodium chlorite solution as delignifying agent, washing the agent from the wood, and impregnating the wood with a hardenable resin. Hardening may be effected by heat, pressure, or #- or y-radiation.
