Abstract

1,247,309. Explosive forming. H. HERTEL. 25 Aug., 1969 [25 Sept., 1968], No. 42312/69. Heading B3Q. [Also in Division F3] Explosion forming apparatus comprises a die 9 in an enclosed space 8 containing a pressuretransmitting fluid, and an expansion chamber 3 containing a gunpowder charge 1 and an insulator 2 movable ahead of the expanding gases to facilitate complete combustion. Felt, cardboard or unvulcanized rubber may be used for the insulator 2 which disintegrates on entering the liquid-filled space 8. The space 8 is formed between members 4, 5 which are relatively movable on guide rods 7. A seal 11 is provided between the die 9 and a workpiece 10. The chamber 3 may taper for part or most of its length, Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown), and the plug (211) fill the end of the chamber.
