Abstract
1,248,583. Leather substitute: treating textiles. STOREY BROS. & CO. Ltd. 7 Feb., 1969 [9 Feb., 1968], No. 6678/68. Heading D1R. A permeable leather substitute is made by impregnating a textile material with an uncured silicone, curing the silicone, then impregnating the silicone-impregnated material with a liquid dispersion of a natural or synthetic rubber or synthetic plastics which does not adhere to the cured silicone-coated fibres, and airing or fusing the dispersion. The rubber or plastics does not adhere to the silicone coated fibres and provides a large number of minute pores or channels between the mesh of coated fibres and the mesh of cured or fused rubber or plastics thus providing air, gas and water vapour permeability. The textile material can be a knitted, woven, or needled nylon felt fabric. The silicone can be applied to the fabric in an organic solvent containing catalyst and/or curing agents. The liquid dispersion of the second impregnant may contain polyvinyl chloride, an ester plasticiser, barium/zinc stabiliser, pigment, filler and optionally further silicone.
