Abstract
1,248,906. Acetals. BUSH, BOAKE, ALLEN Ltd. 6 Nov., 1968 [13 Nov., 1967], No. 51635/67. Heading C2C. Acetals are prepared by reacting an aromatic aldehyde with an alkyl ether alcohol at 120- 200‹ C. in a solvent system having a polarity no greater than that of a saturated aliphatic hydrocarbon, and containing no more than trace quantities of acids, bases or salts, and removing the water evolved from the system. Unreacted starting materials may be re-used to increase yield. No catalyst need be used but small quantities of, e.g. NH 4 NO 3 , CH 3 COCl, HClO 4 , CCl 3 COOH, piperoxylic acid, ZnBr 2 , NH 4 Br, and NH 4 Cl may be present. Examples prepare the compound of formula useful as a pyrethrum synergist, using a petroleum fraction, b.pt. 140-160‹C. or white spirit as solvent.
