Abstract

1,249,382. Photo-sensitive materials. OCE’-VAN DER GRINTEN N. V. Jan. 9, 1969 [Jan. 12, 1968], No. 1348/69. Heading G2C. A photo-sensitive material for producing printing plates comprises a paper support coated with a layer containing an inorganic filler and a water insolubilized polyvinyl alcohol with more than 98% hydroxyl groups, the layer being sensitized by a benzene diazonium salt. Specified fillers are titanium dioxide, lustra clay, and diatomaceous earth and silica or alumina sol or water glass may be added to the filler dispersion. The polyvinyl alcohol is cross linked with e. g. glyoxal to render it water-insoluble. The material is imagewise exposed and developed with a aqueous buffered phloroglucinol solution of pH 4-8 (preferably a solution disclosed in Specification 1, 249, 381) which couples the unexposed diazonium slat to produce an ink accepting dye image. 4-(41-methoxyphenylthis)-5-methoxy-2- (N-methyl-N-ethoxy) carbonylamino benzene diazonium chloride, 4-dimethylamino-3-chloro-2 [-(41-methylphenyl)- this] benzene diazonium chloride and 4-bis (21 -acetoxyethyl) amino-3-(21 , 41 , 51-trichlorophenoxy-6-chloro-benzene diazonium chloride are the specified diazonium salts. Comparisons with water-insolubilized oxidized starch, sodium salt of carboxymethyl hydroxyethyl cellulose, sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, hydroxyethyl cellulose and sodium alginate in place of the polyvinyl alcohol are given. Many other polymers and fillers are specified as being used in the prior art.
