Abstract

1,259,047. Zone-melting. SIEMENS A.G. 26 MARCH, 1970 [29 March, 1969], No. 14711/ 70. Heading BIS. [Also in Division H2] The electrical power supply to the heating means in a gas-filled or evacuated treatment vessel of a zone melting apparatus consists of two conductors insulated from one another and passed through an aperture in the wall of the vessel, the insulating material having a shore hardness of from 10 to 100 and an extensibility of at least 20%, there being a gastight adhesive connection between the conductors and the insulating material. These conductors can be two wires (Fig. 2), in which case the aperture is filled in with the insulating material to seal it, or they can be coaxial tubes 26, 27, in which a plug 29 of insulating material seals the inner tube and insulating material 24 seals the aperture, which material can be replaced by a sealing ring if axial movement of the power supply means is desired. Cold vulcanised silicone rubber is given as an example of an insulator, adhesive gas-tight seals being by silicone resin. The heating means may be such as induction heating.
