1,259,083. Supercharging I.C. engines; reciprocating compressors. GOTAVERKEN A.B. Jan.26, 1970 [Jan. 27, 1969], No.3656/70. Headings F1B and F1N. In a supercharged two-stroke I.C. engine in which engine-driven piston pumps are arranged in series with and downstream of a compressor driven by an exhaust gas turbine, the total stroke volume of the pumps exceeding that of the engine cylinders, a number of engine cylinders are connected to a common air casing, and at least one passage is located adjacent the inlet valves and the outlet valves, respectively, of at least one of the piston pumps feeding air to the engine cylinders connected’ to the common air casing, the passages being provided with closure means which, when fully open, permits air from the compressor to enter the air casing directly, by-passing the piston pumps. One or more compressors, each driven by an exhaust gas turbine, supply air at 14 to an air casing 13 which is common to a number of engine cylinders 10. A number of double-acting air pumps 15 driven by the engine and provided with inlet valves 16 and outlet valves 17 are arranged in series with the compressors. Except at starting and at low load, the compressors can supercharge the engine without the assistance of the piston pumps, which are then put out of action by opening by-pass valves 19, 191. Some of the pumps, or parts of pumps, may be made wholly or partly inactive by opening their valves 19 or 191 permanently, whereby the supercharging is matched to the engine. In a modification, Fig.2 (not shown), the small butterfly valves 19, 191 are replaced by large butterfly valves (20, 201) which contain the inlet and outlet valves (16, 17). The valves (20, 201) may be operated manually or automatically by means of the fuel supply control member or the speed governor or in accordance with the exhaust gas temperature.
