Abstract
1,259,176. Hypochlorites. ALLIED CHEMICAL CORP. 2 June, 1969 [5 June, 1968], No. 27884/69. Heading C2C. Novel compounds of formula A(OCl) n , in which n is 1 or 2 and A is an alkyl or alkylene radical in which all the hydrogen atoms have been replaced by halogen atoms and/or other electronegative groups neutral to the hypochlorite group, the carbon atom or atoms bearing the hypochlorite group or groups having attached thereto at least one fluorine atom and when n is 2, the carbon atoms bearing hypochlorite groups not being directly attached, are prepared by reaction of an inorganic chlorinating agent containing a chlorine atom in a (+1) oxidation state, and attached to an oxygen or fluorine atom, with (a) a compound of formula A(OM) n in which M is a lithium, potassium, sodium, rubidium or caesium atom, optionally in the presence of a compound MF, or (b) a compound containing one or two carbonyl groups not forming part of an aldehyde group, in the presence of a compound MF. The compounds of the invention have bleaching, chlorinating, fumigating and polymerization-initiating properties. Chloroformates of formula A(OCOCl) n are prepared by reaction of the compounds of the invention with carbon monoxide. The compound CF 2 ClNCl 2 is prepared by reaction of CF 3 OCl and ClCN.
