Abstract
1,262,072. Electro-hydraulic forming. VICKERS Ltd. 27 June, 1969 [27 March, 1968], No. 14813/68. Heading B3Q. [Also in Division H1] A wire-fed electrode 25, Fig. 4, for electrohydraulic forming apparatus comprises a tubular body 26 having a removable nozzle 28 and means for electrically insulating the wire W from the body, the insulation including an insert 31 in the nozzle for preventing welding of the wire to the nozzle during an electrical discharge and the entry of liquid into the electrode. In the example, a copper nozzle 28 is screwthreaded into a brass body 26 and clamps a collar 39 about a coating or a shrink-fitted insulating cover 38. The wire-insulating bush 27 and insert 31 are of p.t.f.e., the insert engaging screwthreads in the nozzle and having a base small enough to prevent entry of water past the wire. The wire is fully insulated from the electrode. Operation; wire-feed.-The electrode 25 and apparatus for straightening and feeding the wire are mounted on an insulating plate 1, Fig. 1. Wire from a drum is drawn by a driven wheel 13 over straightening pulleys 2, 3, 4, the pulley 3 being adjustable and spring-loaded about a pivot 7. Another adjustable wheel 14 holds the wire against the wheel 13, which is fixed by screws 15 to a plastics roller (16), Fig. 2 (not shown), driven, through a gear-box (18), by an electromotor. The roller (16) has fins (19) to increase the tracking path and prevent electrical leakage to the motor. When sufficient wire has been fed through the nozzle 28 to make contact with an opposite, current-conducting electrode, a D.C. operated brake (not shown) stops the feed-motor, a timer also being included in the control. After the wire has been disrupted by an electrical discharge to form a workpiece in a die, the brake and other controls are released automatically and the feed resumes.
