Abstract

1,262,278. Opening cans. METAL BOX CO. Ltd. 23 Sept., 1969 [7 Oct., 1968], No. 47466/68. Heading B8D. An aluminium or tin-plate can end comprises a removable panel 1 defined by a scoreline 2, and a pull tab 7 formed by a length of wire bent into a loop with scoreline rupturing end portions 13 and 14 juxtaposed and extending outwardly from the ends of axially aligned straight loop portions 10, which are directly welded, soldered, brazed or cemented to the panel. The loop is cranked upwardly at 15 adjacent an annular bead 3 formed in the panel and provided with further bends 16 to space the curved loop portion 17 from the panel. The wire ends 13 and 14 extend obliquely to each other at 45 degrees to the plane of symmetry 9 of the tab. In a modification, Fig. 8 (not shown), the score line extends around the crest of the annular bead. In another embodiment, Figs. 9-12 (not shown), the wire ends extend parallel to each other and are bent down, the straight loop portions. 10 being secured to the annular bead, the side loop portions being curved about the bead, and the curved finger loop portion 17 being cranked upwardly from the panel surface. The can end may be of non-circular shape, Figs. 13-16 (not shown).
