The invention comprises compounds of formula which are prepared by cyclizing an alphasubstituted-tetronic acid of formula with an acid optionally in the presence of an inert organic solvent, wherein R1 is H, CH 3 or C 2 H 5 , R2′ is H or CH 3 , R3 is H, CH 3 , C 2 H 5 or iso-C 3 H 7 , R4 is H, alkoxy, OH and the hydrolysable carboxylic acid esters thereof, cyclopentyloxy, cyclohexyloxy, tetrahydropyran-21– yloxy, tetrahydrofuran-21-yloxy, OSO 2 OX and OPO(OX) 2 , wherein X is H or an alkali metal atom, and R5 is as R4 or alkyl.
