Abstract

1286557 Controlling filament paths TEIJIN Ltd 27 Aug 1970 [28 Aug 1969 (2)] 41374/70 Heading B5B [Also in Division D1] The slackness of sections across the width of a drawn ribbon-like tow of continuous synthetic multifilaments is removed, during the movement of the tow towards a mechanical crimper by heating any part of the tow having a lower tension per unit length than the other parts until it regains a tension sufficient to remove the slackness. The temperature of the heating means is above the heat-shrinkage initiating temperature (as herein defined) of the filaments but below the softening point. Thus, in the embodiment disclosed in Fig. 1, the tow 1 after being stretched between roller sets 2, 3, 4 and 6, 7, 8 comes, in transit to the stuffer-box 20, under the influence of heaters 22, 23 and 24. In the embodiment disclosed in Fig. 2, wherein the tow is separated into three sub-tows, the heating means 22, 23, 24 are located between the drawing step and the separation. Preferred heating means are a spray of hot water or a jet of a hot vapour such as steam. The method is applicable to filaments of several polymeric materials but particularly to polyesters such as polyethylene terephthalate which may be copolymerized with up to 15% of other monomer units.
