Abstract

1286665 Flaw detection BARRY-WEHMILLER CO 13 Oct 1969 [6 Nov 1968] 50236/69 Heading G1A An apparatus for detecting flaws in container crown rings comprises means to locate the containers for inspection, a housing containing a plurality of lamps and corresponding blocking pins surrounding a position in the path of the container crown ring whereby the light beam from each said lamp is effective to illuminate portions of the crown ring at either side of the blocked beampath, light sensing means; and scanning means between said light sensing means and the crown ring to be inspected, said scanning means operating to expose sucessive sectors of the crown ring to said light sensing means, whereby the crown ring is inspected for light deflecting flaws. In one embodiment, Fig.1, the containers C, are moved on a conveyer 10 through a circular illumination unit 40 where the crown rings CR are illuminated by a number of circumferentially spaced lamps 42, arranged behind shields 43 and blocking pins 43a such that no light is reflected vertically upwards unless there is a flaw present. Light deflected upwards passes through a collimating lens 32, a rotating dove prism 27, and a second collimating lens 36 to be projected on to a mask 38 having an aperture 39, which allows light from sucessive sections of the crown ring to pass through to a photo-multiplier tube 37, thereby scanning the crown ring for any light deflected by flaws. A photo-cell 47 receives light from a lamp 51 after it has passed through one of several circumferentially spaced apertures 49 in star wheel 14, said lamp being positioned such that the photo-cell will generate a signal only when star wheels 13 and 14 have positioned a container within the illumination unit 40 and beneath the photo-multiplier 37. An associated electric circuit includes a coincidence gate which receives signals derived from the photo-multiplier 37 and the photo-cell 47. When both signals are simultaneously received a reject signal is generated to operate a reject solenoid (64), Fig.9A (not shown) which is part of a suction system associated with suction cups 18. A similar embodiment is described, Fig.7 (not shown), in which prism 27 is replaced by a rotary tube having a mask (38) with a slit (39a) therein.
