Abstract

1288758 Freeze drying; freezing liquids STRUTHERS SCIENTIFIC & INTERNATIONAL CORP 23 Sept 1969 [24 Sept 1968] 45295/68 Headings F4G and F4H A comestible solution is freeze-dried by a process involving the steps of cooling the solution to near its freezing point; adding frozen fines; freezing the mixture to form an ice slurry; freezing the slurry to a solid; granulating the solid and recycling the fines so produced, and drying the granulated frozen material. Coffee extract is cooled in a jacket cooler 12 and passes to a tank 15 where the extract is foamed to a desired concentration by volume. The foamed extract is passed to a tank 18 where it is mixed with frozen fines of coffee extract. The mixture then passes into an agitating freezer driven by a motor 25 which freezes the mixture into a uniform slurry of ice crystals formed about the fines. The slurry is frozen solid in a cold chamber 32 into blocks which are crushed between rollers 35, 36. The fines so produced are passed back to the mixing tank 18 and the granulated extract is dried in drying chamber 45.
