Abstract

1288822 Intra-uterine devices C G MASSOURAS 1 April 1970 [8 April 1969 18 Sept 1969] 15396/70 Heading A5R A gynaecological device for insertion into the womb comprises a flexible Y-shaped member having a membrane secured to both arms 2, 3 and extending between them, the device being of a soft plastics material, preferably polyethylene. In the embodiment shown, the membrane is divided at 11 into two portions 8, 9, the adjacent free edges being thickened at 10. The leg 5 of the Y-shaped member is provided at its free end with a transverse bar 7 and a hole 6 through which a thread (not shown) may be passed. The membrane may extend continuously between the arms of the member as indicated at (4), Fig. 1 (not shown), the leg being formed with a plurality of holes (6). The bar 7 may be omitted as in Fig. 5 (not shown), and the leg (5) Fig. 6 (not shown), formed with a plurality of holes (6) at bulged portions. Alternatively, a transverse oval plate (12), Fig. 8 (not shown), may be formed around a collar (13) slidable over the leg of the member and serving to bring the arms closer during insertion through the vagina and cervix, the collar (13) having a hole (15) adapted to register with one of a plurality of holes (6) in the leg, a thread (16) being adapted to hold the collar (13) in a desired position. Alternatively, the plate (12) Fig. 4 (not shown), may be fixed at the free end of the leg of the member and a separate slidable collar (13) provided. In a further modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the arms (2), (3) are extended as flagella (14) adapted to enter the Fallopian tubes and the leg (5) is provided with two transverse bars (7) and holes (6). These bars may be omitted, Fig. 7 (not shown). In use, the device is placed in the uteous via the vagina or through an incision, and serves to prevent internal adhesion and blockages after surgery, or may be used as a contraceptive device. The arms 2, 3 of the member are brought together by pliers during insertion through the vagina, or by means of the slidable collar, transverse members of the leg of the member serving to contact the edge of the cervix to hold the device in position. Parts of the leg of the member extending into the vaginal track are removed after insertion and it is stated that one embodiment of the device may be converted into another by the removal of components.
