Abstract

1289079 Pipe joints; joint-making packing FEDERAL-MOGUL CORP 19 July 1971 [24 Aug 1970] 33746/71 Headings F2B and F2G A joint permitting universal movement between pipes 10, Fig. 1, comprises a housing 11 having at each end a groove adjacent a radial flange 21, Fig. 2, with an inner edge 22 spaced from the associated pipe 10 to permit relative angular deflection, the groove containing a seal ring 12 of plastics formed with an annular chamber 30 connected with the pressure in the pipes through a continuous annular slot 31, a flexure slit 44 in the chamber wall assisting bending of the seal with angular deflection of the pipes, &c. A helically coiled metal strip garter spring 25 is lodged in the chamber 30. Before assembly, the seal ring 12 has a radially inner surface (42), Fig. 3 (not shown), of continuously curved cross-section, which is in part flattened by insertion of the pipe 10, as shown, and the annular chamber 30 is of circular cross-section. The radially outer surface of the seal ring 12 includes a bevel 40, a shoulder 36 in the housing 11 co-operating with a correspondingly shaped shoulder on the seal ring to prevent the latter from being displaced inwardly relative to the housing if the pipes 10, &c., are subjected to negative pressure. The housing 11, Fig. 1, is free to float axially on the pipes 10 between removable stops 13. The stops 13 consist of pivoted latches 16 biased by springs to the positions shown. To release the joint, one or other latch 16 is turned away from its pipe 10, so that the housing 11 can be slidden partly on to that pipe with its remote end clear of the other pipe 10.
