Abstract
1289874 Valves SINGER CO 15 Oct 1970 [17 Oct 1969] 49143/70 Heading F2V [Also in Division G3] A valve comprises cage means 13, 14 mounted in a body 12, the cage means being separated by a baffle 26 and having a first portion diverging in the form of a truncated cone towards an inlet and a second portion similarly diverging towards an outlet, a flexible sleeve 15 having the same configuration as the cage means to control flow through elongated openings 24, and an opening 61 in the housing communicating with a control chamber 59 to enable a differential pressure to be applied across at least a portion of the sleeve. The differential pressure is determined by a control valve 73 having a diaphragm 73a responsive to downstream pressure P 2 and connected by a yoke 73C to a second diaphragm 73b. Movement of the diaphragms regulates the flow through a nozzle 73d between upstream and downstream sides of the valve and provides an actuating pressure for the sleeve through a restrictor 71 and a line 74. In operation, the sleeve is first peeled away from the slots 24 at the smallest diameter portion of the cage means on the upstream side of the baffle and progressively moves to a fully expanded position in which the slots on the upstream side are fully opened before those on the downstream side. The cage means may be formed of investment castings and the slots 24 taper from a point 80 to parallel sides. Ribs on the outer surface of the sleeve 15 prevent complete closure of ports 57, 58 leading to the control chamber 59. The Specification gives dimensions for an exemplary regulator.
