Abstract

1289933 Welding by fusion WEATHERHEAD CO 21 Jan 1971 2904/71 Heading B3R [Also in Division F2] In a welded end-to-end joint between tubular workpieces, such as tubes (Figs. 2, 3) or a tube and a fitting such as an elbow (Fig. 4), the mating ends of the workpieces are respectively provided with telescoping male spigoted and female recessed end preparations and at least one of said end preparations is formed by a sleeve tightly engaging the outer surface of a tube portion. The tubes may be of titanium or titanium alloy. As shown, tube end portions 10, 15 have tightly fitted thereon sleeves 14, 15 having end faces (34), (38) respectively extending beyond and set back from tube end faces 32, 36 to form said recess and spigot. The spigot is slightly shorter than the recess so as to provide an inert gas purge gap between the end faces 32, 36 on workpiece assembly. Each sleeve is slipped over its respective tube end portion and the latter is internally roll swaged so as to radially expand it into tight engagement with the sleeve. The end of the sleeve 14 is initially flared (Fig. 1) so that when its respective tube end portion expands the sleeve said flared portion becomes cylindrical. After assembling together the workpieces, a single weld bead 42 is formed by external arc welding, said bead extending to the inner tube surface and having an inner width at least equal to that of the gap 40 and an outer width at least twice the recess width. To minimize stress concentration, the ends of the sleeves remote from the weld bead are radiused at 54. To prevent galling or fretting, a lubricant film (49) is provided between the sleeves and tube portions at portions of the sleeves remote from the weld bead. The film (49) is preferably a dry lubricant such as MoS 2 , Sb 2 O 3 , graphite or mixtures thereof in a resin binder. Each sleeve may be vapour blasted with aluminium oxide before applying such lubricant coating thereto. The coating is preferably made on both the internal and external surfaces of each sleeve, to assist visual sleeve orientation, and may also be applied to the tube end portions, provided that weld contamination is avoided. In Fig. 4, the recess may be provided in the tube/sleeve assembly or, as shown, in a fitting 44.
